Montgomery County Declares November 1 as Emancipation Day
On November 1, 1864, six months before the end of the Civil War, Maryland became the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line to abolish slavery through voting. One year later, the 13th amendment was ratified.
Now, 156 years later, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Sidney Katz, have proclaimed November 1st as Emancipation Day in Montgomery County.
In a press release Katz said, “On Maryland Emancipation Day, we reflect on our history and recommit ourselves to dismantling institutional and systemic racism.
November 1st officially became Emancipation Day under then-govenor Martin O’Malley in 2013. This year Montgomery County Parks are celebrating the day through online events and at Button Farm Living History Center.
“This is an important day in the history of our State that needs to be amplified so that more people are aware of as we continue our journey toward racial equity in Maryland,” Elrich added in the same press release.
