Why All the Construction on Old Georgetown Road? And Why Will an Intersection Be Closed for 5 Months? We Have the Answers!

Why All the Construction on Old Georgetown Road? And Why Will an Intersection Be Closed for 5 Months? We Have the Answers!

You might have noticed some construction on Old Georgetown around Pike & Rose. The county is working on a project known as the White Flint West Workaround Project. One goal is to realign Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard for improved traffic flow.

Per the county website, this project will also improve sidewalks, bikeways, trails, paths, and more. Another goal is to make the area more pedestrian friendly by reducing “superblocks”.

To help the construction process continue, the intersection of Old Georgetown Rd and Executive Blvd will be closed for 5 months starting Monday, March 22nd until approximately August of this year.

Having the intersection open during construction has led to unsafe conditions– there have been numerous “near misses” in addition to one fatal injury–a foreman was struck by a vehicle as he was exiting a manhole.

A detour involving Grand Park Avenue will be open during this time. The full Department of Transportation’s announcement of the closure can be seen here

Construction for the project began back in 2018 and is expected to finish in November of 2022.  Other aspects of the Western Workaround include a new parking garage, an upcoming apartment complex, and an additional 31,000 square feet of retail space
