Pro-Confederacy “Maryland, My Maryland” No Longer State Song

The Maryland Senate voted unanimously on Friday to remove “Maryland, My Maryland” as the official state song. It had been Maryland’s official song since 1939.

The lyrics of the song come from a 1861 poem and describe Abraham Lincoln as a “tyrant”, and refers to the Union as “northern scum.” The song was used as a Confederate battle cry during the civil war.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Republicans members in the House of Delegates who voted against repealing the song believed the song was a victim of “cancel culture.”

All 47 state senators (Republican and Democrat) voted to remove the song.

A new state song has not yet been announced.
