County Executive Marc Elrich Says the County is Not Looking to Shut Things Down, Encourages Mask Wearing and Vaccines

County Executive Marc Elrich held his weekly media briefing today. The focus was on the rise in cases and how the county plans to respond. “Everything we’re doing is to prevent us from shutting down things”, he said.

Elrich mentioned that the positivity rate is now at 2.42% and the case rate is 7.49 per 100,000. We had 98 new cases yesterday, whereas we were in the single digit for cases last month. Hospitalization rates remain low, but they are going up.

The county is concerned with impact of the delta variant and pointed to what’s happening in Florida as a dire warning. 99% of seniors and 80% of residents between 12-65 are now vaccinated. Even with those numbers, the delta variant is spreading. 100,000 adults in the county are still not willing to get vaccinated

Elrich said “we’re not looking to shut things down” and encouraged residents to wear masks.

Tomorrow the Montgomery County Council, acting as the Board of Health, will be meeting and it is expected that the mask mandate in the county will be reinstated.
