ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 21, 2021—The Montgomery County Council made the following statement about Advisory Opinion 21-10-017 from the Montgomery County Ethics Commission affirming that Councilmember Hans Riemer can sponsor and vote on COVID-19 vaccination legislation, and that the County’s proposed vaccine policy does not impact Pfizer Inc. where his wife is employed.
“The Council sits as the Montgomery County Board of Health and is charged with protecting the health and welfare of all residents. We have worked tirelessly with our public health experts, employees, community partners and residents to strengthen the County’s response to the pandemic.
“The public health legislation introduced by lead sponsors Councilmembers Riemer and Jawando about COVID-19 vaccinations for Montgomery County employees is one example of these efforts. The Ethics Commission affirmed Councilmember Riemer’s ability to act on this issue and found no conflict of interest with his wife’s job at Pfizer.
“In the face of the largest and most challenging global pandemic in modern history, the Council has consistently followed the latest scientific data and evidence in its decision-making. We will continue to evaluate this information, as we work together to protect public health and serve more than one million Montgomery County residents.”
