Councilmember Hans Riemer Proposes Getting Montgomery County Out of the Liquor Business and Getting Beer and Wine Into Grocery Stores

Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer, who declared his candidacy for County Executive back in June, announced today his plan for reforming liquor laws in Montgomery County.

Currently, the Montgomery County ABS (Alcohol Beverage Services) acts as a wholesaler of  alcohol (beer, wine and sprits) throughout Montgomery County.  ABS operates 26 liquor stores throughout the county.

Riemer says that if he is elected to County Executive, he will attempt to pass legislation to:

  1. Allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine. This will require changing laws at the state level, but our County has serious leverage in Annapolis and we’ve got to use it!

  2. Get the County out of the liquor business entirely, while providing a thoughtful transition to better job opportunities to the employees. This too will require a change to state law and County operations.
