“Say Yes to The Dress”; Montgomery County Recreation Asks Residents to Donate New or Gently Used Prom Dresses

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Montgomery County Recreation is working to ensure that the dream of attending prom can come true for high school juniors and seniors. The department is collecting gently used and new dresses that will be used to be distributed on Saturday, April 16 at the Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center located at 14906 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville.

According to a USA Today article teens spend an average of $600 on proms. For many families the money isn’t available for girls to buy a dress and attend the prom.

“The past couple of years our young people have lost out on many special events such as graduations, homecomings and proms,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley. “I am proud of all of the work our recreation staff do to make positive changes in the lives of teens and that we are providing an opportunity for girls to have a pretty prom dress, so they feel good about attending their prom.
