Germantown Resident Wins $50,000 Powerball Prize After Purchasing Ticket at Giant

Every week, a Germantown fan of jackpot games plays Powerball and Mega Millions and, from time to time, collects a small prize. The $10 quick-pick ticket she bought for the May 2 drawing changed that routine, giving the lucky lady a $50,000 prize so big that she had to travel to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to collect the newfound fortune.

The 68-year-old bought her winning ticket at Giant #169 located at 13060 Middlebrook Road in Germantown. She stopped in for groceries and then decided to buy Lottery tickets. The retiree turned her fate over to Lady Luck by selecting a quick-pick ticket. When she checked her Powerball ticket after the drawing, the Montgomery County resident experienced shock and happiness. “I was very excited,” the lucky winner said.

She was the only Marylander to claim a third-tier prize in the drawing and was one of 10 such players nationwide. The avid player retired in December after 39 years as an inspector for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. When asked of her plans for her winnings, the loyal player said the windfall will go into her savings account.

No one has hit the jackpot, which rolled to $229 million for the Saturday, June 11 drawing. The estimated cash value is $132.3 million.
