City of Gaithersburg Sponsors Smart Salt Applicator Training

Per the City of Gaithersburg:
The Stormwater Division is sponsoring a virtual Smart Salt Applicator training on Tuesday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The training is hosted by the Izaak Walton League Salt Watch Program with funding support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The training is free but space is limited. Click here for registration details.

Smart Salting training is designed to help management-level property managers, applicators, business owners, and municipalities improve salt application effectiveness & reduce chloride pollution while keeping roads, parking lots, and sidewalks safe. Participating organizations have been able to reduce their salt use by 30 to 70%, and the training has been shown to prevent chloride contamination in bodies of water. The tons of salt used every year to manage snow & ice damages infrastructure & vegetation and pollutes lakes, streams & groundwater.

This training has been adapted for the City from the renowned Smart Salt training in Minnesota, implemented by Fortin Consulting Inc., now Bolton & Menk, Inc. Attendees will receive a “Gaithersburg Smart Salt Business” plaque to display, helping identify the property or business as partner in the City’s environmental initiatives.
