Per Montgomery Parks: Montgomery Parks announces Juneteenth weekend operating hours and events, including extending its Open Parkways through Monday, June 19, for the holiday weekend.
Special Juneteenth Openings
- Juneteenth at Josiah Henson Museum and Park
What better way to celebrate the National Holiday known as Juneteenth, than to visit the museum dedicated the man, Reverend Josiah Henson, who traveled along the Underground Railroad freeing 118 formerly enslaved persons. Self-guided tours and special hands-on activities will be available for families. Admission, $4 for children and seniors, and $5 for adults. Tickets available onsite. (Josiah Henson Museum and Park, 11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda).
- Juneteenth at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park
Come explore Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park on Juneteenth. Take a self-guided hike on the Underground Railroad Experience Trail and visit the Woodlawn Museum to learn about this history of Woodlawn’s residents, Montgomery County’s agricultural history, enslaved and free black communities, the Quaker experience and the Underground Railroad. Museum admission, $4 for children and seniors, and $5 for adults. Tickets available on site. (Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring).

- Saturday, June 17, 12‒10 p.m.: Juneteenth‒Journey to Freedom at the BlackRock Center for the Arts (12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown).
- Monday, June 19, 10 a.m.‒4 p.m.: The Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival at Cabin John Regional Park (7400 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda).
Open Parkways schedule
The Open Parkways will be extended during the Juneteenth holiday weekend. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles.
- Beach Drive between Connecticut and Knowles Avenue (2.9 miles)
- Saturday, June 17, at 7 a.m. until Monday, June 19, at 6 p.m.
- Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road and between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West
- Friday, June 16, at 9 a.m. until Monday, June 19 at 6 p.m.
- Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue (0.4 miles)
- Open 24/7 for recreation and exercise
Please note: Gate closures are intended to be completed by the times listed above. The re-opening of the parkways begins at the times listed above, however; this process may take up to thirty minutes to complete.
Additional facilities open Juneteenth weekend
The following is a sampling of facilities that are open during the holiday weekend.
Parks, trails, gardens, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, outdoor exercise stations, and outdoor tennis/pickleball and basketball courts* are open daily from sunrise to sunset. (*Select outdoor courts are available to permit.)
- The in-line hockey rink at Ridge Road Recreational Park and street hockey/futsal rink at Dewey Local Park may be permitted, or are available first-come, first serve if not reserved.
- Picnic shelters and campfire rings(opens in a new tab) are available for rental at several locations.
- Wheaton Indoor Tennis (opens in a new tab)and Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center
- Little Bennett Campground (opens in a new tab)
- Cabin John Miniature Train (11 a.m.‒3 p.m.) and Wheaton Miniature Train and Carousel (10 a.m‒6 p.m.)
- South Germantown Driving Range (opens in a new tab)
- Brookside Gardens grounds open daily sunrise-sunset; Visitor Center open daily 9 a.m.‒5 p.m.; Conservatory open daily 10 a.m.‒5 p.m.

- South Germantown Splash Park & Mini Golf

- Indoor nature facilities(opens in a new tab) - Brookside Nature Center, Locust Grove Nature Center, Black Hill Visitor Center/Nature Programs. Trails and outdoor nature play areas remain open sunrise to sunset. Meadowside Nature Center is undergoing building and meadow renovations. However, programs are continuing through the project.
