Triple Grammy Award Winner Dee Dee Bridgewater Will Headline Annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Sat., Sept. 9

Per Montgomery County: Three-time Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater will headline the 18th annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring. The free festival will take place from 3-10 p.m. Bridgewater will take the mainstage at 8:30 p.m. Veterans Plaza is located at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, adjacent to the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The Silver Spring Jazz Festival is a free event. Restaurants featuring a variety of cuisines surround the festival site. Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation and to bring a blanket and/or low back lawn chairs for seating. The festival site is a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro Station.

The Jazz Festival will feature a beer garden with offerings from several breweries in the Silver Spring Brewery & Arts District. The beer garden will have food service, comfortable seating, arts and entertainment and will highlight craft beers brewed in the district.

Vocalist Bridgewater is a Tony® award winner and recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Master’s award. Over the course of a four-decade career, she has put her unique spin on standards as well as re-envisioning jazz classics. Her career has bridged musical genres and she earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. She has performed with jazz notables such as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie.

Bridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony® Award for her role as “Glinda” in The Wiz in 1975. Having recently completed a run as the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day.
