Montgomery Village Middle School to Host Back to School Block Party

Montgomery Village Middle School (19330 Watkins Mill Rd, Montgomery Village) is partnering with nearby Stedwick Elementary School and Watkins Mill Elementary School to host a Back-to-School Block Party on Thursday, September 14th from 6-8pm. The event will feature a DJ, food, games, free haircuts, free immunizations, and more.

“Montgomery Village, Stedwick, and Watkins Mill elementary schools, are very excited to be hosting our Back-to-School Block Party! This is MCPS’ first ever joint Back-to-School event and we are excited to share how our cluster is reimagining how we engage with our community and celebrate our new status as a community school. We have over 50 community partners participating, and we will be offering a variety of free activities and services, including
haircuts, immunizations, music, and performances,” MVMS Principal Roy Liburd tells us.

“Our purpose is to bring the community together and create a sense of belonging for all of our stakeholders. Now more than ever, schools should serve as a resource hub for the communities they serve. Our schools created this event to raise awareness of the wealth of resources available to them, right here in The Village. We’re most excited to see our beautifully diverse community come together and celebrate our schools. We can’t wait to see the smiles on the faces of our students, families, and staff as they enjoy all of the free activities and services.”

This is the first year Montgomery Village Middle School is a Community School. According to MCPS, “Community Schools provide the health, mental health, academic, and extracurricular support services needed to flourish. We focus on family and community engagement, culturally responsive relationship building, mental and emotional health, trauma informed practices, restorative practices, and physical health and wellness in addition to MCPS’ quality instruction. Our goal is to promote equity while prioritizing the critical needs of students and caregivers urgent to their wellbeing.”

The event will provide a free shuttle for families to park at Watkins Mill Elementary to be dropped off at MVMS. Stedwick will also have bussing available for their neighborhoods to their school.
