Councilmember Jawando’s Statement on the Attacks on Israel and Threats of Violence

Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando released the following statement on Friday, October 13:

The disturbing attacks by Hamas have shocked all of us. We have seen innocent people kidnapped and killed. These vile actions have deeply impacted my neighbors, friends, colleagues, and staff and they fear for the lives of their loved ones. All communities globally and locally must unite in condemnation of calls for violence. We cannot, and will not, tolerate terrorism or acts that put innocent lives in jeopardy.

Authorities are on the highest alert today due to the unconscionable call by Hamas for a global “Day of Rage” – threatening Israelis and Jews with violence. I have been in touch with public safety and school officials regarding the deeply concerning developments. We are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of our community. I urge everyone to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and prioritize their safety and the safety of those around them.

Human dignity is a right for all people. Israelis and Palestinians are decent people who seek to live in peace. Terrorists are using the conflict in Gaza to sow division, hatred, and violence.

In the wake of these acts, we have heard alarming calls for retaliation against the Jewish community. Jewish schools in our county have closed for the day out of fear of antisemitic attacks, which is a sad testament to the real and present threats they face. Malicious individuals have associated all Muslim communities with the attacks and called for violence. I denounce any act of retaliation and violence and I want the Jewish community of Montgomery County to know that I stand strong with them against antisemitism.

In Montgomery County, we often raise our diversity as one of our greatest strengths and assets. We have 1.1 million residents and over 150 nationalities represented across the county. Conflict, terrorism, and violence around the world impact Montgomery County deeply.

Our schools, houses of worship, and communities should be sanctuaries for understanding and fellowship. In this moment, I urge our communities to come together to support one another in this time of pain, grief, and fear to show those who seek to divide us that our strength is in our diversity and the community we build together.

My thoughts remain with the people affected by the ongoing conflict, especially with the families who have lost loved ones and those living in constant fear. I stand resolute in our commitment to peace, and will continue to support all efforts that aim to bring about a resolution to this longstanding conflict.
