Anonymous Tip Leads to Arrest in Amazon Fresh Armed Robbery

Per MCPD: “An anonymous tip to the Crime Solvers call center has led to the arrest of 24-year-old, Demetri Gaskins, of Washington, D.C.

On Monday, November 20, 2023, at approximately 12:43 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the Amazon Fresh in the 5400 block of Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda (Chevy Chase) for the report of a commercial armed robbery.

The investigation by detectives has revealed that Demetri Gaskins, along with three additional accomplices entered the store and began filling bags full of items. When an employee approached the suspects, one of the suspects pulled up his shirt, displayed a handgun in his waistband and announced the robbery. The employee then backed away and all four suspects, including Gaskins, left the store carrying bags full of stolen items.

On November 22, 2023, the Montgomery County Department of Police – Media & Public Information Office distributed a news release asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects involved. On Monday, November 27, 2023, an anonymous tipster assisted detectives in developing Gaskins as a suspect.

Following the tipster’s call, detectives, through additional investigation, were able to positively identify Gaskins.

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, Gaskins was arrested on the strength of a warrant. He has been charged with first-degree assault, armed robbery and firearm related charges. He is currently being held without bond.

Crimes Solvers is a program designed to enlist the assistance of the community to aid in helping the Montgomery County Police Department solve crimes. If any information is provided that leads to an arrest or indictment of a suspect, the tipster may be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000.

Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this crime or Gaskins’ accomplices to call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspects. Callers may remain anonymous.”
