Per the City of Rockville: “Join the City of Rockville for something new at this month’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
The 52nd annual celebration, one of Rockville’s signature events, will move from the traditional Monday holiday to 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Rockville High School, 2100 Baltimore Road. It will feature a new conference-style format with a film screening and question-and-answer session, a panel discussion, performances and the Salute to Nonprofits.
Hosted by the Mayor and Council and the city’s Human Rights Commission, the free event kicks off a week of service and celebration of King’s legacy and founding principles. The Salute to Nonprofits will offer an opportunity to learn about organizations serving our community and to sign up to take part in service projects. The celebration will also feature a screening of the award-winning documentary “Finding Fellowship.” The film, about belonging and building community in a divided world, recounts how three racially segregated churches in Gaithersburg’s Quince Orchard community merged in the months following King’s assassination in 1968.
The Rev. Gerard A. Green Jr., a Quince Orchard native and former district superintendent for the Greater Washington District of the Baltimore Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church who is featured in the film, will participate in a question-and-answer session following the screening.
The day also includes a panel discussion with city and county justice, equity, diversity and inclusion professionals; a drum performance by Soul in Motion; a kid-friendly performance by Groovy Nate; and a kids craft activity. A continental breakfast will be provided, while supplies last.
