City of Rockville Offers Theft Prevention Tips for Hyundai and Kia Owners

Per the City of Rockville: “Thieves are exploiting a system flaw to steal Kia and Hyundai vehicles with 2011-2021 model years.

Thefts of these vehicles have been on the rise nationally and regionally, including in Rockville, following social media posts showing how to start these cars without a key by using a USB cable.

Owners whose Kia or Hyundai uses a metal or steel key should take extra precautions. Vehicles with a push-to-start ignition are not at risk.

All vehicle owners, not just those whose vehicles are at a higher risk of being stolen, should follow these tips:

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with your engine running.
  • Lock your car and take your keys with you.
  • Park in a well-lit area or parking garage.
  • Remove USB cables from vehicles while not in use.
  • Consider purchasing a wheel lock or anti-theft device.
  • Never keep your title or other personal documents in the vehicle.
  • Contact your dealership for potential software updates or recall notices.
  • Report any suspicious activity, especially during evening or overnight hours, to the Rockville City Police Department at 240-314-8900. (In the case of an emergency, call 911.)”
