Seti Ouelega, a junior at Watkins Mill High School and college freshman at Montgomery College, along with her young sister Neeyo, have coauthored and self-published a children’s book titled “Marvelous Meghan: Our Big Sister” about their older sister who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four.
According to the authors, “In the book, we talk about life with our sister and how her behavior differs from other kids her age. We emphasize that our sister Meghan teaches us that while people with autism may experience things and express their feelings differently, they also just want to be loved and have fun. Our book is now being shared on multiple platforms including Amazon and Barnes & Noble under the title “Marvelous Meghan: Our Big Sister”.
“We realized that there are people who don’t fully grasp the concept of Autism Spectrum Disorder and what it actually is. We want to educate the public so people will learn what autism is and how it can affect different people, using our sister Meghan as an example. We hope that by doing this, our community will be one step closer to including and accepting people with autism. Its not everyday that little black girls share their story, and its definitely not everyday that a black girl with autism is talked about.”
