Rue21 Files for Bankruptcy, Announces Plans to Close All Locations

Teen clothing retailer rue21, which currently has a location at Westfield Wheaton Mall (11160 Veirs Mill Rd), has announced it has filed for bankruptcy for a third time and will be closing all of its locations.

According to Reuters, the chain will begin store closing sales at all 450 of its locations and intends to sell its brand and other intellectual property. Previously, rue21 had a location in Wheaton Mall that closed in 2017 during its prior bankruptcy filing, before reopening in May 2022.

Last week we reported that fashion retailer Express had also announced its filing for bankruptcy and plans to close almost 100 of its locations, including the one at Wheaton Mall.

We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.
