Underground Pizza Co. (UPC) at 8235 Georgia Ave in Silver Spring has announced it will permanently close on June 3rd. The restaurant opened in the space previously occupied by Olazzo in February 2022.
UPC posted the following message on it’s social media pages on Thursday evening: “After very deep consideration, it is with great sadness to announce that we are closing our Silver Spring store on June 3rd. This decision was not an easy one, but with our lease ending soon we felt it was time to move on from our Georgia Avenue location. We are sad to close this chapter in our company’s history, but we are so proud of what we were able to accomplish at this location. We are grateful for all the love and support we’ve received over the last 2+ years in Montgomery County and specifically from the Silver Spring community. When we first took over the lease from Olazzo we had high hopes for the space, but after nearly 2 1/2 years, we realized the ceiling was a lot lower than we had anticipated. It’s time for us to shift our focus to what’s next for Underground Pizza both in Montgomery County and beyond. All other Underground Pizza locations will continue to operate as normal, and we have been / will be expanding each location’s operating hours. All gift cards and loyalty points will remain valid for current and future locations. Thank you so much for all of the Support we hope to see you this week.”
The company was started by Evan Weinstein, who began selling his Detroit-style pizzas at local “pop-up” events during the pandemic that were marketed through social media.
UPC opened its first brick & mortar location inside of Power Plant Live! in Baltimore in December 2020, followed by Silver Spring, and Towson in May 2022. Earlier this year, the company opened a ghost kitchen at Sports & Social DC (1314 U St NW) in Washington, DC.
In addition to pizza, Underground Pizza serves wings, salads, “pepperoni infused” mac & cheese balls, and mozzarella sticks.
