The Maryland Lottery is warning residents about a phone scam where individuals are falsely informed that they have won the Powerball lottery jackpot.
The Maryland Lottery posted the following on its Facebook page on Thursday, June 13:
“The Maryland Lottery is aware of a phone spoofing scam in which people are receiving phone calls from 208-334-2600 and being told that they have won Powerball and need to take action to claim their prize. That phone number belongs to the Idaho Lottery, which has no involvement with these calls. The scammers are spoofing the Idaho Lottery’s number. Lotteries do not make phone calls of this nature. We have no way of knowing who is holding a winning ticket until the winner comes forward to claim their prize. If you receive a phone call from this number, please do not answer it or engage with the caller. If you have any questions, please contact the Maryland Lottery at 410-230-8800 or by email at [email protected].”
