The Office of Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown issued the following news release on Wednesday, June 13, 2024:
Attorney General Anthony G. Brown applauded today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court that preserves widespread access to the abortion medication, Mifepristone.
“This morning, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected a lawsuit, brought by a group of doctors and organizations, challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s regulation of Mifepristone. Previously, Attorney General Brown had joined more than two dozen attorneys general across the country in two amicus briefs to the Supreme Court, arguing that the FDA’s determination that the medication abortion drug, Mifepristone, is safe and effective is supported by an overwhelming medical consensus developed over more than two decades of use. The coalition also argued that the FDA’s subsequent regulatory actions – including the authorization of the generic version of Mifepristone, permitting qualified clinicians (other than physicians) to authorize its usage, and enabling its distribution by mail – are all backed by solid evidence.
Attorney General Brown said, “the Supreme Court’s rejection of this lawsuit is a major victory for the right to choose here in Maryland and across the country. Mifepristone remains available in our state, and access to the drug remains intact. Restricting access would have created a disproportionate burden for people of color, low-income and LGBTQIA+ members of society, people living in rural areas, and people with disabilities. Rest assured, however, I remain vigilant. While this battle is won, we know that there are challenges looming that could threaten the reproductive freedoms we cherish here in Maryland. I will continue to take this fight wherever it leads.”
