Co-Defendant Pleads Guilty in Murder of 18-Year-Old Woman Found in Shallow Grave

A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Thursday for the death of Rosa Sanchez Merino, whose remains were found in a shallow grave last September in Olney.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Theresa Chernosky, defendant, Roberto Rivera-Delgado, 23, of unknown address, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and participating in a criminal organization resulting in death. The plea hearing was held yesterday, July 25, 2024. Rivera-Delgado faces the potential of life in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 13, 2025.

Rivera-Delgado is one of four co-defendants charged in a homicide that occurred in May of 2023. On September 30, 2023, he led Montgomery County Police detectives to a wooded area along Brookville Road in OIney to a shallow grave that contained the skeletal remains of victim, Rosa Sanchez Merino.

Co-defendants Aracely Abaraca-Melgar and Iris Alanzo-Salgado are pending trial. The fourth co-defendant’s identity and case details are shielded due to age. Assistant State’s Attorneys Gabe Carrera and John Grochowski are prosecuting this matter.”

Rivera-Delgado was arrested for a parole violation in Nevada and extradited to Maryland on Tuesday, September 29, 2023. He then led Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes detectives to the burial site of Sanchez Merino. On October 1, 2023, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy, ruling Sanchez Merino’s death a homicide.
