Montgomery Parks has released a list of special events that will be offered by their nature centers this August.
Courtesy Montgomery County: The special events at nature centers in August will include:
- Upcycled Art. Saturday, Aug. 3. 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Brookside Nature Center, 1400 Glenallan Ave, Wheaton. Repurpose old sheets, shirts, and jeans and use them to create a beautiful piece of art. Materials will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring their own. This class is geared toward beginner crafters. Ages 18 and older. Registration required. $25.
- History of Boyds Pontoon Boat Tour. Thursday, Aug. 8. 6:30–8 p.m. Black Hill Discovery Center, 20926 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds. Learn about the history of the area from local experts from the Historical Society of Boyds while cruising the lake. Ages 14 and older. Registration required. $8 per person ($7 per person, Friends of Black Hill).
- Campfires at Black Hill. Saturdays, Aug. 10 and 24. 7–8 p.m. Black Hill Discovery Center, 20926 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds. Join a naturalist for themed songs, stories, games, and s’mores around the fire. Ages 1 and older. Registration required. $7 per person ($6 per person, Friends of Black Hill).
- Make and Take: Ferns and Ceramics. Friday, Aug. 16. 6–7:30 p.m. Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Lane, Rockville. Make an art piece from clay and live fern fronds and fiddlehead imprints. Instruction, materials, and a naturalist-led stroll to discover Maryland’s magical ferns included. Registration required. Ages 16 and older. $20.
- Full Moon Fridays. Friday, Aug. 16. 6:30–8 p.m. Locust Grove Nature Center, 7777 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda. Take an enchanting hike and enjoy a campfire after. Feel free to bring food to warm over the fire. Marshmallows will be provided. Registration required. Ages 5 and older. $8.
- Never Grow Up Camp. Tuesday, Aug. 20, through Thursday, Aug. 22. 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Black Hill Discovery Center, 20926 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds. Climb a tree, go kayaking, fishing or enjoy a pontoon boat ride. There will be chances to explore and play outside just like when you were a kid. Ages 55 and older. Registration required. $175 per person ($170 per person, Friends of Black Hill).
- Night Fishing. Wednesday, Aug. 21. 7:30–11:45 p.m. Black Hill Boats, 20920 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds. One-of-a-kind opportunity to relax, fish and make unforgettable memories under the stars. Free. No registration required. Must comply with Maryland State Fishing Regulations.
- End of Summer Night Hike. Saturday, Aug. 24. 9–10 p.m. Maydale Nature Classroom, 1638 Maydale Drive, Colesville. Learn about the nocturnal animals that live in the woods, meadow and ponds of Maydale on this naturalist-led hike. Registration required. Ages 6 and older. $6.
- Early Morning Pontoon Cruise. Thursday, Aug. 29. 7:30–9:30 a.m. Black Hill Discovery Center, 20926 Lake Ridge Drive, Boyds. A great opportunity to take photos of wildlife activity in the morning with great lighting or to engage in some birding. Ages 18 and older. Registration required. $14 per person ($13, Friends of Black Hill).
