Maryland to Join IRS Direct File in 2025

Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman will announce Maryland’s participation in the IRS Direct File program, a new free online tax filing system, at a press conference joined by state and federal leaders on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 in Annapolis.

Per the news release: Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman will host a joint press conference on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 12:45 p.m. with state, federal, and community leaders to announce Maryland’s participation in the Internal Revenue Service’s Direct File program. The joint announcement will be held in the Assembly Room of the Louis L. Goldstein Treasury Building.

Joining the Comptroller will be Maryland Governor Wes Moore, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer, U.S. Representative John Sarbanes, and U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo.

Direct File is a new free service from the IRS allowing eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their tax return online. Direct File was established due to a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act requiring the IRS to explore the feasibility of a public online filing service. According to the IRS, taxpayers spend approximately 13 hours and $270 on tax preparation each year.

Organizations providing tax assistance to Marylanders will also attend the announcement.
