Did You Know This Maryland Airport Features a Delicious Cafe?

Café Sophie (7940 Airpark Road, Gaithersburg) is a European-style café with a Scandinavian influence, located at the Montgomery County Airpark. Owners Sandy and Tom named the café after their beloved dog Sophie, who occasionally greets customers.

Sandy’s connection to the airpark runs deep—her grandfather and father, Bill and Jim Richardson, built and operated it in 1960. “I used to come to the airpark with my dad on weekends. It was always fun to be in the air with my father flying,” she shares. Sandy, a pilot herself, met Tom, also a professional pilot from Bergen, Norway, who flew private charters across the US and Europe. As fate would have it, Tom landed at the Airpark one day and, in his words, “never took off.”

Café Sophie’s Chef Asael crafts a creative menu using locally sourced ingredients. They partner with Wagner’s Butcher for meats, South Mountain Creamery for milk, eggs, and ice cream, Binkert’s for German sausages, and Fresh Baguette for croissants and baguettes. Guests can enjoy freshly baked muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, European treats, specialty coffees, and a range of international beers, wines, and mimosas (including the popular Lingonberry Mimosa). It’s a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while watching planes come and go—a hit with kids!
