Maryland AG: Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Wheaton Under Investigation

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office issued the following news release on Sunday, September 22, regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday night.

The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of
the Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred
in Wheaton, Montgomery County, Maryland, Saturday night.

On September 21, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers with the Montgomery County
Police Department responded to the 3400 block of Janet Road in Wheaton after receiving a 911
call for a report of an assault in progress. Upon arriving on scene, officers encountered an adult
man in a yard holding an object in his right hand. Police shouted commands at the man to “drop
the knife;” however, the man did not comply and began crossing the street. One officer
discharged his service weapon, striking the man. Officers immediately rendered emergency
medical aid and called for EMS. The man was pronounced dead on scene. A grill fork was
recovered near the man’s body. No officers were injured.

The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and discharging officers within two
business days of the incident, although that period may be extended if there is a specific reason to believe that an officer’s safety is at risk.

Officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident. The IID
will generally release body camera footage within 20 business days of an incident. There may be
situations where more than 20 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to
complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the
identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released
to the public.”
