Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to an apartment fire in the 9900 block of Shellburne Terrace, off Rio Blvd in Gaithersburg, on Sunday, October 28.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire occurred at the Sawyer Flats residential complex and was likely caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on a fourth-floor balcony. A child noticed the fire and alerted their mother, who attempted to extinguish it before firefighters arrived. The incident caused approximately $30,000 in damage, displacing two adults and one child, with no reported injuries.
