“A Maryland Lottery scratch-off player and her friend, when viewing the Lottery’s website, would often say, “Why can’t that be us?” and fantasize about winning a big check. Their dreams came true this month and the pair visited Lottery headquarters to claim a $50,000 top prize won playing the new Holiday Luck Doubler scratch-off.
It was about a week ago when Lottery Luck shone on the anonymous Montgomery County player nicknamed “Blessing from Above,” a name chosen for publicity purposes. She was grocery shopping at Safeway in Germantown when she cashed a $100 winning Pick 4 ticket, using the prize to buy scratch-offs.
“There were only two of the Holiday Luck Doubler in the machine, so I bought both of the them,” said “Blessing from Above.” “The second ticket was the winner and I knew right away because I matched one of the winning numbers.”
Under that number was a $50,000 top prize. “Blessing from Above” immediately texted a picture of the instant ticket to her best friend, who she says “is more like a sister.” The two often play scratch-offs together and, when they win, they text pictures to each other to confirm their luck.
“When I saw that text, I screamed and called her right away,” said the friend.
“Blessing from Above” told Lottery officials that “she was so excited and was shaking so much she could not drive.”
The medical field worker said she plans to help family members financially and pay some bills with her winnings. She added that she might also take a trip.
The Montgomery County retailer that sold the lucky $5 scratch-off shares in the excitement. Safeway #1579, located at 19718 Germantown Road, will receive a $500 Lottery bonus for selling the top-prize winning instant ticket.”
