Germantown Update: Openings, Closings, and Coming Soon (November 2024)

Here is a list of businesses that have recently opened, are closing, or are set to open soon in Germantown, MD:

New: D1 Sushi
D1 Seafood Buffet & Bar (19961 Century Boulevard) is now open in the space previously home to Sushi Legend Cajun Seafood and Bar, and before that, The Greene Turtle. Sushi Legend closed in December 2023 after being open for less than a year. In early 2022, signage for “Four Seas Restaurant” was installed on the building, but the restaurant never opened. The Greene Turtle closed in the summer of 2020.

Per D1 Sushi Buffet: “BIG NEWS, Germantown! We’re thrilled to welcome you to the soft opening of D1 Seafood Buffet, and to celebrate, we’re giving YOU a 5% discount on all meals until November 30th! Weekday Lunch Buffets starting at just $17.99—perfect for a midday treat! Weekend & Holiday Buffets with all-you-can-eat options—bring the whole family! Prefer to stay cozy at home? New: Ross
Ross is now open at 12940 Middlebrook Rd. in the Germantown Commons shopping center. The store is located in the space that was previously home to Bed Bath & Beyond, next to Gold’s Gym.

Ross is a discount retail chain that sells clothing, shoes, and housewares with over 1,400 stores in the U.S., including Montgomery County locations in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Silver Spring. According to Ross, “Since 1982, our focus has been on bringing our customers a constant stream of high-quality department and specialty store brands at extraordinary savings (aka bargains) while providing an easy, fun and organized shopping experience.”

Coming Soon: Del Mar Latin Food
“Coming soon” signage is now up for Del Mar Latin Food at 18058 Mateny Rd in the Cloppers Mill Village shopping center in Germantown. The restaurant will take over the space previously occupied by La Casita, which closed in July 2023. The name “Del Mar,” meaning “from the sea,” suggests a seafood-focused menu. We’ll provide updates as more information becomes available.

Cloppers Mill Village is also home to Happy Uncle, Laperaux, Rainbow Sushi, and Shoppers Food Warehouse.

Coming Soon: Massage Envy
The locally owned and operated Massage Envy at 127 Crown Park Ave, next to Coastal Flats, in Gaithersburg has announced that it will be moving to Germantown starting December 1st. According to an email sent to members, the memberships will remain active at the Gaithersburg location until the end of November and transfer over to the newly renovated Germantown space at 20950 Frederick Rd. in the Neelsville Village Shopping Center.

You may recall that Massage Envy operated at the same Germantown location until the summer of 2023 when it closed citing that the store never fully recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic. Massage Envy offers massages, stretch therapy, and facials, and has additional Montgomery County locations in Rockville and Silver Spring. The full message sent to Gaithersburg members can be seen below:

“Thank you for being a loyal member of the independently owned and operated Gaithersburg Massage Envy franchised location. We have some exciting news that we’d like to share with you.

We have made the decision to upgrade our location by moving to Germantown into a newly renovated, incredibly beautiful facility with plenty of parking right out front! You will not have to change anything on your end except your drive to and from. Your membership will not be effected at all so no action is needed!

This change will occur Dec 1, 2024. That means that until then, you will continue to be serviced in the Gaithersburg, Crown Park Ave location. On Dec 1 and after, your appointments will be held at 20950 Frederick Road, Germantown, MD 20874. We will send reminders as this date approaches for your convenience.

Coming Soon: Paris Baguette:
Paris Baguette, “the neighborhood bakery café where communities come together over expertly crafted baked and brewed goods”, will be opening a Germantown location at 21030 Frederick Rd in the Milestone Center. The store is expected to open by the end of the year.

Paris Baguette opened its first Montgomery County bakery in Rockville Town Square in the summer of 2023. The Rockville Town Square location is located at 101 Gibbs Street and offers Korean and French baked goods. Franchise agreements have been signed to expand across 25 states with approximately 200 locations currently in the United States. Last month, we reported that the bakery will be opening a Bethesda location on the the ground floor of the new Sophia Bethesda Apartments at 4924 St. Elmo Ave.

Coming Soon: Smoothie King
Smoothie King has signed on to open a new location at 20630 Seneca Meadows Parkway at the Shops at Seneca Meadows development (where Wegmans is located) in Germantown. Smoothie King will be taking over part of the space that was previously home to DaMarco The Italian Place with F45 Training occupying the other portion of the space.

Permanent signage is already up at the location, but an opening date is not yet available. Smoothie King has locations in Bethesda, two in Rockville, and one in Olney that opened just last summer.

Closing:  Big Lots
In October, we reported that the Big Lots at 20926 Frederick Rd in the Milestone Shopping Center, Germantown, will be permanently closing. The store is now offering discounts of up to 40% on select items. The discounts are expected to increase as the store approaches its anticipated closure, likely right after Christmas. A specific date is not yet available.

The discount home goods retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 9, and revealed plans to shutter over 300 stores. CNBC reports that Big Lots agreed to sell its business to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management for approximately $760 million, which includes $2.5 million in cash along with its remaining debt and liabilities.

Big Lots has an additional Montgomery County location at at 19142 Montgomery Village Ave in the Montgomery Village shopping center. We will provide an update when additional information becomes available.

Closing: Meadows Farms Nursey
Meadows Farms Nurseries and Landscape at 11406 Hawkes Rd in Clarksburg has announced that it will be permanently closing. According to a representative at the location, the store will remain open through Thanksgiving week, offering 50% off all plants during this time. Meadows Farms has additional nearby locations in Burtonsville and Frederick, as well as others across Virginia.

According to its website, “This convenient nursery location offers a full selection of shade and flowering trees, Japanese maples, shrubs, groundcovers, and perennial and annual flowers, including Proven Winners and Simply Beautiful. In addition to our plant material, which includes native plants, we have garden tools, topsoil and planting mixes, mulches, fertilizers, and pesticides, and a wide variety of organic products.
