Montgomery County Hosts MLK Weekend Events Honoring Civil Rights Legacy

Montgomery County will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a weekend of service projects on Jan. 18-19, culminating in a free celebration at Strathmore on Jan. 19 featuring music, storytelling, and performances exploring civil rights history.

Per the news release: “Montgomery County will host a weekend of events on Saturday, Jan. 18 and Sunday, Jan. 19 to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK). The weekend will begin with Day of Service Projects across Montgomery on Saturday and Sunday. It will culminate with a free event at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. The celebration will feature music, storytelling, local talent and celebrity guest appearances.

This year’s event, “A View from the Bridge: Injustice, Resistance and Hope,” will honor Dr. King’s legacy while exploring the powerful stories of three iconic bridges that symbolize key moments in the history of civil rights in America.

The celebration will feature performances by Spur of the MomentDaryl DavisShirleta SettlesIziz la Enfermera de la SalsaConcert Chorale of WashingtonMiss Chief RockaAkhmedova Ballet Academy and John Sellman, Jr.

The event is free, but tickets are required. For ticket information, visit the Strathmore website or the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights website. Free parking is available in the adjacent parking garage.”
