Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown issued the following statement on Tuesday, January 21:
“Yesterday President Trump signed an executive order declaring that the United States only recognizes two sexes and rejects a person’s gender identity. This is a decision that ignores the humanity and reality of transgender Americans across our State and nation.
The president’s mandate limits federal funding for transition health services and requires federal prisons and shelters to segregate incarcerated people, sexual assault survivors, and migrants by their sex, not their gender identities.
Make no mistake: this Executive Order threatens people’s lives.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General will protect all Marylanders – especially members of marginalized communities – and wants transgender residents of our State to know that they belong, they matter, and our Office will fight for their rights and safety.”
