Pepco Expands Assistance as Customers Face Rising Energy Bills

Residents in the area have seen Pepco bills increase, and the company is extending support measures through March to help customers manage higher energy costs. These measures include waiving late payment fees, offering longer repayment periods, suspending disconnections, and providing energy efficiency and financial assistance programs.

According to the State of Maryland’s Office of People’s Council, Pepco bills are increasing because the costs Pepco charges to deliver electricity have risen significantly, with delivery charges increasing by 33% since 2020. Cold or hot temperatures also contribute to higher bills due to increased energy use for heating or cooling. Additionally, the cost of the EmPOWER program, which helps reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, has increased, partly due to legislation aimed at eliminating an unpaid balance from previous years.

Per Pepco: “Pepco is extending its enhanced support measures through March. These programs will help residential and commercial customers manage their winter energy bills and provide relief from high costs due to extreme cold, increased usage, and the overall cost of energy.

Since launching February 4, customers have taken advantage of the new support, which includes:

  • No late payment fees for January, February and March 2025
  • Longer repayment periods.
  • Suspending physical disconnections for nonpayment through March 2025
  • Waiving deposits for disconnected customers who are seeking to restore service
