Maryland Attorney General Reaches $60K Settlement with Capital Jazz Over Unrefunded Cruise Fees

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced a settlement requiring Capital Jazz to refund nearly $60,000 to consumers for canceled SuperCruises in 2021 and 2022, following a prior $1.3 million settlement with Royal Caribbean.

Per the news release distributed on Thursday, June 26: “Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced today that his Consumer Protection Division has entered into a settlement with Maryland-based Capital Jazz, a local promoter that organizes music-themed events, including annual Jazz “SuperCruises.” In 2021 and 2022, Capital Jazz was forced to cancel its SuperCruises due to the pandemic.

The settlement with Capital Jazz and the company’s owner, Clifford Hunte, requires the company to return nearly $60,000 in fees it owed to consumers that had not previously been refunded. In a separate settlement in March 2024, Royal Caribbean—the operator of the cruise line on which the SuperCruises were scheduled to occur—returned more than $1.3 million to consumers.

“Marylanders deserve to get their money back when a business fails to deliver the goods and services they paid for, even in unexpected and unusual circumstances like a global pandemic,” said Attorney General Brown. “This settlement ensures that consumers who trusted Capital Jazz with their hard-earned money for vacations that never happened will finally receive the full refunds they deserve.”

Under this settlement, Capital Jazz has agreed to return fees that consumers paid when they purchased their cruise tickets, which had not been included in earlier refunds issued by the company. Capital Jazz has also agreed to purchase cancellation insurance to help ensure that, in the event of any future mass-cancellation, consumers who purchased cruise tickets will receive prompt refunds.

Additionally, Capital Jazz has agreed to pay $50,000 to the Attorney General’s Office, with that amount increasing to $100,000 if the company breaches the settlement.
