Iconic Maryland Deli Celebrates 70 Years

Filippo’s Italian Specialties, located at 1226 Triangle Ln in Wheaton, is celebrating 70 years in business this Saturday, September 6, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Originally opened in 1955 as Marchone’s, the deli was founded by Thomas Marchone and later run by Filippo Leo, who worked there for over 35 years before taking ownership in 2012, a year after Marchone’s passing. In September 2022, it was reported that Leo was selling the business, saying he was “just ready to retire.”

Today, Filippo’s is owned by Don and Celia Henderson, along with their daughter Shelley Scanzaroli, who manages the deli. “We are thrilled to continue Filippo’s legacy and plan to run it as a family business just as Filippo has,” said Don Henderson in November, 2023. “We’ve been customers for over 40 years. My mother discovered the deli, and it has been a go-to ever since. My sister first saw the news about the sale on your site and commented, ‘Oh no, where am I going to get sausage for Nonni’s spaghetti sauce for my Christmas lasagna?’ Nonni is what we called our Italian grandmother.”

Filippo’s menu features classic favorites like the Italian Cold Cut (Capicola ham, Genoa salami, provolone, and toppings), the Steak and Cheese with melted provolone and sautéed onions and peppers, and the Panino with prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, Genoa salami, and provolone, with prices starting at $9.45.

In 2020, Filippo’s won the TasteMoCo tournament for “Best Deli” in Montgomery County, beating out 31 other delis nominated by readers of The MoCoShow.
