New Speed Camera Laws Will Feature Tiered Penalties Based on Speed

Montgomery County officials will hold a news conference on Tuesday, September 30, at 11 a.m. at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Wheaton to announce new automated speed enforcement laws taking effect October 1.

The legislation, passed during the 2025 Maryland General Assembly, authorizes the use of automated speed enforcement on the county’s most dangerous roadways and creates a new graduated fine schedule based on how far above the speed limit a driver is traveling when caught by a speed camera.

Yesterday, we reported that Montgomery County has signed a contract with Vitronic to add 140 new speed cameras and 76 red-light cameras, with installation beginning in October at locations identified through traffic safety data. The news comes on the heels of the state of Maryland rolling out a new fine structure for speed camera violations on October 1, replacing the long-standing flat $40 fee for drivers traveling 12 mph or more over the limit.

Tuesday’s event will feature remarks from County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmember Natali Fani-González, Senator Jeff Waldstreicher, Delegate Jared Solomon, and Assistant Police Chief David McBain, followed by a Q&A.
