Commanders Alumni Help Celebrate Final Week of Montgomery County NFL Flag Football Season

Montgomery County Recreation concluded the regular season of its NFL Flag Football leagues this past weekend at Wheaton High School. The program, which is offered each fall and spring for youth ages 6–14, drew 468 participants this season, including 84 girls. Games were held at both Wheaton High School and Damascus Community Recreation Center.

The final week featured special guests, including former Washington Commanders players Rocky McIntosh and Marcus Smith, team mascot Major Tuddy, and members of the Command Force entertainment squad, who greeted families, signed autographs, and took photos with players. County mascots such as T-Rec (Recreation), Sparky the Fire Dog (Fire and Rescue Service), and Rocco the Recycling Retriever (Environmental Protection) were also on hand.

Flag football has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing youth sports nationwide. Earlier this summer, the Washington Commanders announced a contribution of more than $1 million to support funding, equipment, and programming for 127 girls’ flag football programs across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region, with the goal of expanding access to the sport.
