VisArts Offers Free Art Workshops for Furloughed Federal Employees

VisArts in Rockville is offering free collage workshops for furloughed federal employees during the ongoing government shutdown to provide a creative outlet and sense of community. Each session, limited to 25 participants, includes materials and instruction, with additional workshops scheduled for Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 at VisArts’ Gibbs Street location

Per VisArts: “As thousands of federal employees across the region face furloughs, VisArts in Rockville is offering free collage workshops to help people slow down, create, and connect.

Participants will work with torn and cut paper on small canvas boards, with all materials provided and guidance from an instructor. No prior art experience is required.

“You just need a willingness to try something new, share a table and enjoy good company,” said Lisa Marie Ryder, Chief Executive Officer of VisArts. “Creativity and community can carry us through uncertain times.”

Each session is limited to 25 participants and will be offered only while the shutdown is in effect. The Oct. 13 session filled quickly, and additional workshops will be held Mondays at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 at VisArts, 155 Gibbs St., Rockville. Registration is free for recently furloughed federal employees. VisArts has offered similar workshops during previous government shutdowns.

With more than 70,000 county residents working for the federal government, a shutdown sends economic ripples through local families, contractors, and small businesses. The workshops aim to offer a moment of calm and connection when it’s needed most.

In addition to the workshops, VisArts’ free exhibitions are open Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., and Friday from noon to 8 p.m. Current shows include James Williams II: “Logan’s Run,” Danni O’Brien: “Toning Systems,” and “Garden Follies (Showers).”
