Limon’s Gems & Jewels, a historic family–owned jeweler in Bethesda and first reported closing by Robert Dyer, will close its doors this month after more than a century in business. Located at 7909 Norfolk Avenue, the business confirmed it will cease accepting new work during the first week of November and anticipates closing by Thanksgiving, with limited availability afterward to complete existing orders.
The decision follows the retirement of Cliff Limon, who has worked in the jewelry business for more than 50 years and represents the third generation of the family to run the store. In a message to customers, the Limon family reflected on its legacy, sharing:
“Our great-grandfather, Jacob, established his jewelry business in 1920. With successive generations of the Limon family, including Robert, Cliff, and Robbie, we have spent 105 years handcrafting jewelry and providing our clients with fine gems and diamonds… We are deeply grateful for the privilege of having shared in your stories, celebrated your milestones, and earned your trust year after year.”
According to the company’s website, Limon’s history dates back to 1920, when founder Jacob Limon opened a trade shop designing and manufacturing handmade platinum and gold jewelry for jewelers in the Washington and Richmond regions. His son, Robert Limon, later became a certified gemologist and expanded the business, ultimately relocating the firm to Bethesda in 1968, where it continued its tradition of handcrafting fine jewelry and offering gemological services. Over the decades, Limon earned a reputation for craftsmanship, ethical business practices, and expertise in gemology. The shop remained family–operated through multiple generations, with Cliff and Robbie Limon continuing the legacy in recent years.
Customers with outstanding orders will be contacted, and the store will remain reachable at 301-657-8585 for a period following its closing. The Limon family thanked the community for decades of support, writing, “It has been a privilege to serve you and be a part of this community for so long.”
