Donation Drive Launched to Support Jamaica Following Hurricane Melissa

Local leaders are calling on the community to support relief efforts for Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, caused widespread devastation. Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins and Montgomery County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles announced a donation drive in partnership with the Embassy of Jamaica to collect essential supplies for affected families and communities.

Donations will be accepted through Monday, November 17 at two drop-off locations: the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Montgomery College Germantown Bioscience Education Center, open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to assist with sorting donations.

Priority items include bottled water, non-perishable food, hygiene products, baby supplies, first aid and safety items, blankets, towels, and cleaning supplies. Monetary donations can be made online at supportjamaica.gov.jm.

“We stand in solidarity with our residents and constituents affected by Hurricane Melissa,” the leaders said in a joint message, noting the storm’s impact on the Jamaican diaspora in the region.
