According to the MCPS Foundations Office, “Upon arrival, students were welcomed by Whiting-Turner representatives and received a safety orientation and an overview of the project’s scope and progress. After they were divided into small groups, the students were then guided through the construction site, gaining insights into real-world applications of their classroom learning.
Throughout the tour, Whiting-Turner staff highlighted the collaborative nature of modern construction projects and the critical role of project managers in coordinating multiple teams to ensure timely, high-quality results. Students were also introduced to the many specialized trades—such as welding, plumbing, and ventilation installation—that contribute to completing a complex commercial build.
In addition to providing an authentic, hands-on experience, the MCSCTF and Whiting-Turner are exploring a potential partnership between Seneca Valley High School and the company. The collaboration would include opportunities for MCSCTF students to construct storage units for the reopening of Northwood High School, further expanding students’ exposure to practical, career-focused projects.:
