Montgomery County officials and local leaders will gather on Monday, Nov. 24, for a ceremony marking the start of a new partnership between the County and WRS Inc. Real Estate Investments to relocate and upgrade the Lakeforest Transit Center.
The project is a key early step in the larger plan to transform the former Lakeforest Mall property into a mixed-use community with housing, entertainment, retail, and public gathering spaces. Lakeforest Mall, which opened in 1978 and served the area for 45 years, closed in 2023.
The press conference will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at 9670 Lost Knife Road in Gaithersburg, in the parking lot behind the existing transit center. Speakers will include County Executive Marc Elrich, Maryland Delegate Julie Palakovich Carr, Councilmember Sidney Katz, Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, WRS Principal Kevin Rogers, and MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. Maricela Cordova, MCDOT special assistant to the director of strategic projects, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
