Earlier this year, Montgomery County installed more than 200 No Turn on Red signs as part of the Safe Streets Act of 2023, known as MC Bill 11-23. The law required The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) to place these restrictions at designated traffic signals unless a safety risk is identified.
In the last two weeks, an additional 18 No Turn on Red signs have been installed at intersections across the county. Many of the new signs are located within downtown and town center areas where pedestrian activity is high. The latest installations include:

The goal of the Safe Streets Act is to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety by restricting right turns on red at certain intersections. The legislation also included provisions to increase walk times at crosswalks and require infrastructure reviews following incidents in school zones, walksheds, and bus stops. Drivers are prohibited from making right turns at red traffic signals where “No Turn on Red” signs are posted, particularly in designated downtown and town center areas. Violations may result in a $90 fine and one point on the driver’s license, consistent with state regulations.
