Beloved Maryland Pizza Staple Has Only One Location Still Open

Many Marylanders have thought that Pizza Oven has been long gone, but that’s not true. Once a regional staple with multiple locations from Montgomery County all the way out to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Pizza Oven never fully disappeared. Today, one location is still quietly serving in Riverdale, Maryland (Prince George’s County), carrying decades of history.

Mr. 8 That made the drive out to Riverdale once he heard that the landmark location was still active under new management. Mr. 8 That rates every restaurant using two simple categories: price and taste, each scored on a scale of 1-5. Add the two scores together, and if a restaurant reaches a total of 8 or higher, it officially “8 that.”

The Riverdale location was the original Pizza Oven location, established in 1957. Some people believe there is a legitimate debate between whether Ledo’s or Pizza Oven is the true originator of the Maryland Style Pizza.

Mr. 8 That: “The wings had their own take on Mumbo Sauce; sweet up front with a lingering heat that balanced nicely. The wings weren’t fried, but still had a pleasent rendering on the skin. The pizza is as Maryland Style as it gets with a flaky, almost cracker like crust on the edges. The sauce was less sweet than other Maryland style pizzas i’ve tried. But the sauce to cheese ratio on the pizza overall was right in the sweet spot. ”

During his visit, Mr. 8 That tried an 8 piece of their mumbo sauce chicken wings and a large pizza; half plain cheese, half pepperoni and banana peppers. He gave the flavor a 4.4 and the price a 4.3, leading to a final score of 8.7. That means that Pizza Oven 8 That!

When doing a Google Search, Pizza Oven is still labeled as “Permanently Closed” but still continues to operate normal business hours according to their Yelp Page.
