On Friday, Governor Wes Moore joined a coalition of governors at the White House to sign a Statement of Principles calling for reforms to the PJM Interconnection electricity market, which supplies power to Maryland and other states.
The agreement outlines a coordinated approach to encourage new power generation, limit electricity cost increases for residents, and require data centers to bear the costs associated with the additional energy infrastructure needed to meet their demand.
The statement urges PJM to adopt measures that would freeze certain customer cost increases while reforms are implemented, shift generation costs to data centers through targeted utility rates, and incentivize new power supply through a proposed long term reliability auction by September 2026. It also calls for faster review of pending energy projects to reduce grid connection delays, building on prior regional efforts led by Maryland and other Northeast and Mid Atlantic states to improve grid reliability, reduce consumer costs, and adjust capacity market rules ahead of future auctions.
