Pepco Urges Customers to Prepare as Snow and Ice Move In, Increases Staffing

With winter weather expected to bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the area from late Saturday, January 24, through Monday, January 26, Pepco says it is preparing for potential power outages by increasing staffing and mobilizing crews ahead of the storm.

The company noted that heavy snow followed by freezing rain can place added strain on trees and power lines, with falling limbs and debris accounting for roughly half of storm-related outages. Preparations are focused on maintaining safety and restoring service as quickly as possible if damage occurs.

Pepco is also urging customers to prepare in advance by stocking bottled water and non-perishable food, charging electronic devices, and assembling emergency kits with items such as flashlights, batteries, radios, medications, and first-aid supplies. Customers who rely on electricity for medical equipment, as well as older adults and people with disabilities, are encouraged to confirm backup plans in case of extended outages. Additional recommendations include keeping a corded landline phone available and placing working flashlights on each level of the home.
