Maryland Urged to Check for Unclaimed Property as $33 Million Returned

Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman and Governor Wes Moore marked Unclaimed Property Day on Monday, February 1, 2026, encouraging residents to check whether the state was holding money or property in their name.

Unclaimed property can include uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, dividends, and dormant financial accounts that businesses are required to report to the state after three years of inactivity. The Comptroller’s Office highlighted its recently launched online system, which allows residents to search for unclaimed property, submit documentation electronically, and track claims at any time.

State officials reported that since the system’s rollout in October 2025, more than 18,000 claims totaling $33 million have been returned to Marylanders. Reclaiming property through the state program is free, and officials noted that many residents may be unaware they are owed money. During Fiscal Year 2025, the Comptroller’s Office returned $121 million in unclaimed property, while states nationwide returned $4.2 billion. Marylanders can continue to search for and claim unclaimed property through the Unclaimed Property page on the Maryland Comptroller’s website.
