The Montgomery County Public Schools Foundations Office partnered with the National Association of Women in Construction and the Construction Trades Foundation to host a Block Kids Building Competition at Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Silver Spring on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
The event brought together elementary students, educators, and industry professionals to introduce young participants to careers in construction, engineering, and design through hands-on learning. Part of a nationwide competition for students in grades K–6, Block Kids challenges participants to design and build original structures using simple materials such as interlocking blocks, string, tin foil, and rocks, with projects judged on creativity, design, and construction techniques. The local winner will advance to regional competition, with the opportunity to continue on to the national level. Organizers said the event reflects a shared commitment to early STEM exposure and building an inclusive future workforce in the construction trades.
