Maryland Attorney General Urges Passage of Kids Online Safety Act

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined a bipartisan coalition of 40 state and territorial attorneys general in urging Congressional leaders to pass the Senate version of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), citing concerns about protecting children from online harm.

In a letter sent ahead of possible consideration of the House version of the bill, the attorneys general warned that certain provisions in H.R. 6484 could weaken existing and future state laws by limiting states’ authority to regulate online safety for minors.

The coalition expressed support for the Senate version, S. 1748, which includes a Duty of Care requirement and preserves states’ ability to enforce and strengthen protections for young users. The call for federal action comes amid ongoing investigations and lawsuits by state attorneys general against major social media companies, including Meta Platforms and TikTok, over practices related to underage users, as officials continue to examine the impact of online platforms on children and teenagers.
