The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration announced that new ramp metering systems will become fully operational on 16 northbound Interstate 270 ramps in Frederick and Montgomery counties starting Tuesday, February 24, weather permitting.
The system is part of the I-270 Innovative Congestion Management Project, which aims to reduce congestion and improve travel reliability along the 34.4-mile corridor between I-70 and I-495. When active, drivers will see warning signs and signals on entrance ramps and may be required to stop before merging, with vehicles released one at a time to improve traffic flow.
State transportation officials said the ramp meters may operate between 4 am and 11 pm, primarily during peak travel periods or when congestion is present, and could reduce commute times for some drivers. The broader I-270 project includes added lane miles, traffic communication signs, and intelligent signal systems designed to manage bottlenecks and improve safety. With daily traffic volumes expected to increase by 2030, officials said the upgrades are intended to support long-term mobility, safety, and economic activity in the region.
