Montgomery County Potomac River Advisory Remains in Effect After Sewage Spill

The recreational water advisory for the Potomac River remains in effect in Montgomery County following the Potomac Interceptor sewage spill, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

Officials said recent water sampling continues to show elevated bacteria levels in the river within Montgomery County, where the spill occurred on federal land. Health officials will continue monitoring conditions, and the advisory will remain in place until testing shows the water is safe for recreational use.

Meanwhile, recreational water advisories have been lifted in Prince George’s County and Charles County after testing showed bacteria levels have returned to acceptable levels. There has also been no advisory issued for the Potomac River in St. Mary’s County, which remains outside the affected plume area. Officials also said public drinking water remains safe and unaffected, and a precautionary closure of some Potomac River shellfish harvesting areas is expected to be lifted March 10 pending final confirmation testing.
